“You carry a garment, but for a shoe, it’s different: the shoe carries you, and therein lies all of the difficulty.” Robert Clergerie was fond of evoking this principle—which he credited to fellow footwear designer André Perugia—and it remains a touchstone of the French house, now led by creative director Roland Mouret. Among his latest creations are these sleek leather loafers, detailed with a notched vamp of velvety suede. Their slip-on ease is accented by a collapsible “step-down” back.
